I chose her

I stood at the crossroads
where love meets hate,
a forked path, both darkened,
but only one warmed by her smile.
I was given the choice,
between the fire that burned within me
or the cold wind that had always blown
from the place I called home.

They said I’d be a fool to choose her,
to trade blood for the pulse in her touch,
but they never felt the way she made
the broken parts of me glow again.

So I chose her.
I chose the way she laughed
like the world wasn’t falling apart,
the way her family welcomed me
as if my history didn’t matter.

But it took me a while,
a long while, to forgive myself
for having chosen love over hate
and stitched my heart
while theirs kept bleeding.

They all said love hurts —
but they were wrong.

It’s the silence of an empty room,
the echo of a name not called,
my loss, rejection and the hate —
those are the things that cut deep.

Love is the only thing
that doesn’t tear at my seams,
the only balm for the ache
of all that has been lost.

And when I let go of the guilt,
I found that love doesn’t hurt
it heals, it covers, it mends,
it’s the one thing
that doesn’t hurt
and the reason
you survived
that pain
