infinite chains
We think we’re free to choose and act,
but really, we’re just cosmic farts.
For causes beyond our conscious sight,
shape the day and guide the night.
And though we think we choose our fate
we’re links in chains we can’t escape
products of environment and genes,
and forces beyond our conscious means.
Our choices, efforts and intentions, all play a part,
but they’re just links in the chain of causes that start,
before conscious awareness and control take hold,
leaving us with the illusion of free will and control,
while we are mere links in the chains of cause and effect.
Our minds allow us to cause our desires, but we can’t reject,
the influence of environment, upbringing, and society,
factors that always affect our behavior and propriety.
Yet we are not irrelevant links in this grand scheme;
we can cause our motivation, aversions and dreams.
Not just an effect of the cosmos, but also a cause,
influencing what is around us and changing its course.
Though we’re determined, we still have power,
to rearrange our wills, and minds to flower.
Anything in the cosmos is both effect and cause,
and we’re no exception, at all, to these laws.
As we’re not separate, but a part of it all,
connected by our skin, an osmotic thrall.
We’re both the puppet and the puppeteer,
determined by the infinite, eternal and clear
uncreated cosmos that’s within and without,
the endless logic of this cosmic spawn.
We are the cosmos and its manifestation,
a union of effect, and cause in creation.
Our fate is determined, but comfort we find,
in the thought of cosmic unity combined.
We dance to a tune, that’s invisible and far,
a mysterious melody, played by a cosmic czar.
And in this seemingly paradoxical dance,
we’re both the chance and the circumstance.
Yet in this knowledge there’s no despair
just endless logic to explore and share,
for in the mystery of the cosmic tune
we find the comfort of the moon.
And though we dance to an unseen piper,
our steps still hold the power to inspire
It’s up to us to move with grace and grease
every link of this chain and all its keys,
making choices with reverence and care,
as part of the cosmos, not just a mere snare.
We are not alone, in this infinite chain,
but linked with the universe, in joy and in pain.
